CAQA Gridworks Networks is an electricity supply industry contractor that builds, inspects, maintains and operates transmission lines, distribution networks, zone substations and rail traction overhead systems on behalf of network owners and a metropolitan rail operator. Crews work on energised and de-energised high voltage and low voltage apparatus, string conductors on steel towers, joint underground cables, treat and replace poles, control vegetation near powerlines and maintain the 1,500 volt direct current overhead wiring that powers suburban trains. The business also runs a network operations centre that issues access authorities, develops and directs switching programs, and monitors the network by supervisory control and data acquisition for its clients.
The business is organised into six departments across three depots. Overhead Distribution, Underground Cables and Network Operations, Safety and Training are based at the Ballarat central depot, which also houses the network operations centre staffed around the clock. Transmission Lines and Substations and Protection work from the Traralgon eastern depot near the transmission corridor to the Latrobe Valley. Rail Traction operates from the Sunshine depot on night possessions when trains are not running. Field crews work a nine day fortnight with a rostered storm response standby, and the operations centre runs three shifts.

Every conductor is live until it is isolated, proven de-energised and earthed under an access authority. There are no shortcuts on a network.

Switching operators, access recipients and crews work to a single agreed program. If the plan changes, everyone stops and re-briefs.

Distribution overhead construction and maintenance
Pole replacement, conductor and crossarm renewal, low voltage services, public lighting and live line maintenance on 22 kilovolt and low voltage networks using glove and barrier and stick techniques.
Underground cable installation and jointing
Cable laying, jointing and terminating of low and high voltage polymeric and paper insulated cables, high voltage cable testing and underground fault location for urban and subdivision networks.
Transmission line services
Inspection, structure and hardware maintenance, conductor stringing and live line work on 66 to 220 kilovolt transmission lines, including tower climbing and rescue capability.
Substation and protection maintenance
Inspection, thermovision surveys, circuit breaker and transformer maintenance, protection relay testing and direct current system maintenance in zone and terminal substations.
Rail traction overhead maintenance
Inspection, maintenance and renewal of 1,500 volt direct current overhead wiring, catenary, droppers, section insulators and traction bonds on night possessions for a metropolitan rail operator.
Network operations, access and vegetation
Access authority and permit administration, switching program development and direction, supervisory control monitoring, asset inspection programs and powerline vegetation clearance under the line clearance regulations.
